CINWS Announces Completion of Radar Upgrade
The Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS) has announced the successful completion of the upgrade to the Kearney Gomez Doppler Radar.
Director General at the CINWS, John Tibbetts, has extended appreciation to the radar manufacturer, Leonardo Germany GmbH and its team of engineers led by Nevzat Baser, along with CINWS Manager of Technical Services, Michael Carey whose expertise and dedication ensured the upgrade was completed before schedule and exceptional standard.
A new product called Dual-Polarization Surface Rain Intensity will be introduced when radar images return to the CINWS website. This product will enhance the traditional colour coded radar imagery by providing quantitative rainfall rates in inches per hour. Higher values indicate heavier showers which may cause gusty conditions, reduce visibility, and, if prolonged, localised flooding.
Chief Meteorologist Kerry Powery has stated that the Cayman Islands National Weather Service is assessing additional radar products for public release. Work is also underway to improve the overall user experience on the CINWS website so that future forecast products can be delivered more effectively to the public.
Radar imagery is expected to be available to the public on the CINWS website at www.weather.gov.ky, by 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 24 December 2025.
The Cayman Islands National Weather Services has also thanked the public for their patience throughout this essential upgrade, which is aimed at strengthening the Islands’ weather monitoring capability and enhancing the service provided to the community.
