MRCU Enhances Safety with Respirator Fit Testing

4 March 2025 | Blog | By: Kevin Watler

The Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) is taking workplace safety to the next level with its recent AccuFit 9000 - Digital Respiratory Fit Testing Training, ensuring that employees who work with chemicals have the proper protection they need.

MRCU’s Safety and Compliance Officer, Osei Alexander, is passionate about keeping his team safe. His research revealed that MRCU is one of the largest importers of chemicals in the Cayman Islands, meaning it has a responsibility to handle these substances with the highest level of care. While many chemicals are safe when used correctly, some require special handling and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize potential health and safety risks. One critical component of PPE is Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE), which helps protect against hazardous airborne substances.

One important piece of PPE is a respirator, which is recommended when mixing or applying certain chemicals used in mosquito control. But finding a supplier for respiratory fit testing on the island proved to be a challenge. Respirator Fit testing is a crucial step that ensures a respirator properly seals to a user’s face, providing the necessary protection from harmful particles and fumes.

MRCU took the initiative to invest in its own AccuFit 9000 – Digital Respiratory Fit Testing Equipment. This allows the team to conduct in-house fit testing, improving safety and efficiency for its employees.

To ensure the training was comprehensive and impactful, MRCU invited a representative from the equipment manufacturer to provide training. They also extended the opportunity to key stakeholders who may require respirator fit testing in their own fields, including:

  • Department of Environmental Health
  • Hazard Management Cayman Islands
  • Cayman Islands Fire Service
  • Molecular Biology Lab

By leading this effort, MRCU is not only protecting its own employees but also helping improve safety standards across the Cayman Islands.

Mr. Alexander emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating: "Safe chemical handling isn’t optional—it’s a commitment and the only way to work. This training ensures that our team and other key agencies have access to proper fit testing, helping protect those who protect the public."

MRCU continues to prioritize workplace safety while carrying out its mission to keep mosquito populations low and reduce the risk of disease transmission.
